Since 1966 the Boys & Girls Club of Denison, Girls Club only until 2003, was and continues to be a leading force in delivering high-yield programs and advocacy for children’s issues. All our programs are focused on helping young people achieve academic success, live healthy lifestyles, and become people of good character and citizenship.
We are a dynamic and growing organization. We remember our history, appreciate what we have accomplished so far, but we look proactively to a future where we can serve a greater number of children who would benefit from the Boys & Girls Club experience.
Three years ago we identified that with the coming school realignments the future of elementary youth programs in Denison will need to be school based. Our daily attendance will shrink from 132 children daily to 70 per day when Golden Rule Elementary closes. TAPS transports children from other schools to the Club but they have limited capacity. For the 2012-13 school year we opened two after school pilot programs at Terrell and Hyde Park elementary schools. Because we planned ahead we have another year to gain experience in this type of program delivery. By the start of the 2014-15 we plan to be in all five DISD elementary schools.
The realignment will also give us a great opportunity to reach out to the young people, tweens and teens, moving from BMac middle school to the former high school.
For the past year we have been working with the local Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club to create a merger of our two Clubs. Originally the Boys Club, they also became a coed Club in 2003 creating two Clubs within a half mile of each other doing essentially the same programs.
At the beginning of the 2012 school year they recognized that two Clubs simply did not make sense and discontinued their after school programs and we were tasked with providing services for another 30 to 40 children daily. We continued discussions and finally merged in May of this year. The merger means we will be caring for even more children this summer and the addition of major sports programs in football, cheer, and basketball.
We cannot accomplish this without continued and NEW financial support from the community.
The proceeds from this event will directly help us operate our summer program. Our expenses skyrocket during the summer when we see more children and serve them for longer periods of time. We open at 7:30 am and don’t close until 6pm Monday through Friday.
